Everything new in GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
OpenAI has been quietly crushing benchmarks in recent models
OpenAI just released a new model in Codex called GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, the company’s new frontier agentic coding model, that’s faster, more capable, and ~30% more token-efficient.
IMO, it’s a much needed update. OpenAI’s models have been falling behind, especially with Cursor’s release of Composer and Google’s release of Gemini 3.
Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent optimized model. Yes, ChatGPT with GPT-5.1 is good at coding, but it’s optimized for general use. Codex is for coding, and I wouldn’t use any other OpenAI model in my AI-IDE (Cursor, etc).
Codex usage is more than 10x since august!
You can use the model in your favorite AI-assisted editor like Cursor, or you can use it in Codex-CLI.
Codex CLI is overtaking Claude Code
Senior engineers have a new AI coding sidekick to consider. OpenAI shipped a massive update to its Codex model and introduced a Command-Line Interface (CLI) tool that brings Codex directly into your terminal. This should come as no surprise to those of you using Claude Code already.
Of course, OpenAI is dogfooding the model. In the past month alone, Codex has been an accelerator behind new products like Aardvark, Atlas, the Sora Android app, and more.
